Hyophorbe lagenicaulis The Bottle palm is native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, specifically Round Island, near the coast of Madagascar off the south eastern coast of Africa. The palm is easily distinguished by its bottle shaped trunk and stiff fronds. it has a swollen trunk near the ground and tapers towards the crown shaft hence the name bottle palm. The crown holds from 4 to 8 leaves (fronds). It is salt tolerant and slow growing to a mature height of about 15 to 20 feet. It is classified as USDA hardiness zones 10 -11. Cold weather damages and a freeze may kill this palm. It holds up well to windy conditions such as tropical storms and minor hurricanes. This palm can be placed in the landscape as a focal point or used as a container plant in the garden or greenhouse, it requires full or partial sun. It likes moderate water, so during the dry season it must receive adequate watering. Fertilize three times per year, in the spring, summer, and fall with palm fertilizer. It is not prone to major pest or disease problems.
