A primitive variety of the grocery store bananas that we see in the market. The fruit is seeded, and the tree grows to a height of about 10ft. This is a rare variety. AEAE ( very limited availability) A really incredible variegated green & white banana plant! This one is amazing in that it also bears variegated fruit ! The skin/peel on the fruits are variegated, but the flesh is like a regular banana. This is an extremely rare plant and highly desired by collectors and exotic landscapers. The plant appears to be more pH sensitive than most. Prefers a soil that is slightly more on the acidic side. The offshoots of this plant may become all green or white if the pH changes, therefore making it really hard to get new plants. Height 10-14 ft. Extremely Rare. Price $150 per corm. Available in June 2008. Single Plants are available for shipping. Please contact AFRICAN RHINOHORN This is a tall plantain with long, strongly curved fruits that give rise to is common name. This banana cultivar may have the longest fruits of any banana; up to 2’ in length, an individual fruit may weigh as much as 2 lbs. The colorful pseudostem and petioles make this an excellent landscaping plant, but too big for most containers. This banana may be eaten ripe or cooked like other plantains. ‘African Rhino Horn’ attractive foliage and the fact that it can reach up to 20’ in height, make it a conversation piece. Cold sensitive. APPLE Height 8-10 ft. A unique tasting banana that suggests the flavor of an apple. Here in Florida, the plant is also known as the 'Manzana' banana, which in spanish means apple! The fruit is smallish and some call it 'lady finger' bananas. Its a popular home landscape tree as well and for good reason! The beautiful leaves are long lasting, and the tree grows to a perfect height. BALBISIANA A disease resistant variety that bears a seedy fruit but the plant is valued for its use in banana breeding for new and improved banana varieties. Balbisiana is hardy and makes a wonderful landscape plant. Seeds from the fruit sprout readily and grows to a height of 14-18 ft. BASJOO aka 'Japanese Fiber Banana' This cool tolerant, seeded variety grows about 12 ft. tall, is solid light green and is a fast growing sturdy plant. It frequently sends out rhizomes 2-3 feet away from the corm. It has a golden-cream colored ovate inflorescence making it a very attractive acquisition. Becoming more popular in cooler regions for a tropical appearance.
BRAZILIAN This is one of the tastiest bananas in our opinion. The plant has excellent wind tolerance since it is a stout plant with a strong root system. The fruit quality is very good and may be allowed to ripen on the plant without splitting. The plant is solid green with no red color but due to the majesty of its size is a good landscaping plant. Small bunches of fruit which are extremely sweet and tasty. BURMESE BLUE One of our newest additions and incredibly produces purplish blue bananas! In our opinion, these are best used for their ornamental qualities of the fruit but can be eaten like the plantain rather than the sweet banana. The height is 14 feet and makes a great addition for banana collectors.
CARDABA A Philippine cooking variety that is a truly an attractive plant with a bluish hue to the fruit and very white pulp. The fruit is stubby and irregular in shape but can get quite large. Height 10-12 ft. COCCINEA (also known as uranoscopus) This ornamental variety produces an erect inflorescence of brilliant red-orange color that lasts for weeks. Height 3-6 ft. Good for containerized growing in filtered light. Limited Availability. CAVENDISH Both the Dwarf (5 ft.) and Giant (7-8 ft.) varieties produce wonderful tasting fruit as does the others in the Cavendish sub-group. A vigorous grower with wide green leaves. One of the more common grown varieties in the USA. DWARF & TALL GROS MICHEL Once the only commercial variety seen on grocery shelves now replaced by Grand Nain due to its sensitivity to fusarium wilt. Although it has a superb flavor, it is not promoted as it once was. Height 7-10 & 11-14 ft.. DWARF & TALL NAMWA Also known as pisang awak and other names through out the world, this group of lady finger bananas produce large sized bunches of sweet delicious fruit that is prized in the Indoesian areas as well as the U.S. Somewhat sensitive to Panama disease (fusarium wilt). Dwarf form approx 8-10 ft tall, tall form 10-12 ft tall. DWARF / TALL ORINOCO Named from the region in South America near the Orinoco river where they grew profusely, they are also called the horse banana or "burro". These angulated cooking bananas are also a tasty treat out of hand when fully ripe. Their versatility make them popular in many regions of the world. Height 5-6 ft. dwarf & 12-14 ft. on the tall. DWARF / TALL RED Known by many names in the world (Cuban Red, Jamaican Red, Colorado, Indi, Macaboo) this is a delicious lady finger type banana and is one of the most beautiful. This is one of many red-skinned banana cultivars, this one stays short and takes up little space. Most red bananas are much esteemed for good tasting fruit, and this one is no exception. This cultivar also has red pseudostems. A favorite small banana, the red bananas take longer to ripen than most. ‘Dwarf Red’ is a strong, vigorous Musa. The skin should be almost black before it is ripe enough to eat. DOUBLE This beautiful Cavendish type has very wide, dark green leaves and produces a full sized fruit. Also called the Mahoi, the second generation produces multiple bunches of fruit, usually 2 but sometimes more. Height 5-6 ft. ELE ELE The ‘Ele Ele’ is also known as the ‘Hawaiian Black’ Banana. The plant grows quite tall up to 16-18 feet. The stem is sturdy and the overall appearance of the plant is that the entire pseudostem is dark brown or black. The leaves are green. The fruit is between a plantain and a banana and the flavor is delicious. This plant is a vigorous grower and stands up well to wind GOLDFINGER (FHIA-1) A rapid growing, mostly green plant producing a wonderful tasting, slightly sub-acid, refreshing fruit that gets 6-8 inches long or better. It is a very disease resistant, wind & cool tolerant plant that is easy to grow. In our area the ripening fruit does not get dark yellow, instead gives only a slight color change when mature so check it often when close to harvesting. Height 10-12 ft. This one is a MUST FRENCH HORN This plantain is much favored in Ecuador and the West Indies; used as a staple in their diets. The slightly curved fruit is large and delicious, comparable to the commercial plantains that we know and adore. Height 12 ft. GIANT PLANTAIN A taller version of the "Puerto Rican DWARF PLANTAIN". Both producing a superior fruit and commonly used for "maduros" and "tostones", a staple in the Caribbean and Hispanic cuisine. This is the one you find in the super market. Heights 12ft. and dwarf 8 ft. GOLDEN AROMATIC A Cavendish type sweet banana that has a fragrant aroma and gold ripe fruit. The full sized fruit produced from this wide leaved plant is a real taste treat. Height 10-12 ft. GRAND NAIN
GRAND NAIN-X-SUMATANA This is a very unusual hybrid with the leaf coloring of the sumatrana and the growth habit of the ‘Gran Nain’. The plant is short and stout 7-10’, with wide maroon variegated leaves that make it a prized landscape specimen. Has small seedless fruit and is sometimes referred to as “x cross”. HUAMOA A Polynesian cooking banana that is short and stubby but packed with flavor. The ‘Hua Moa’ is a sturdy plant with thick trunk that grows to 14 feet tall. It is of solid green color and medium wide leaves. The fruit of the ‘Hua Moa’ are very fat, growing to 3 inches or more in diameter and 10 to11 inches long The texture has no fiber at all and the effect when fried is just delicious. The plant is somewhat cold sensitive and can be injured by temperatures below 40°F. ICE CREAM This hardy, cold tolerant banana plant reaches up to 15 feet in height. In spite of its height, it stands up to the wind well having a strong stem and root system. The leaves are a silver-green color. And the fruit is blue-green. The fruit is medium sized and the flesh is snow white. The quality of the fruit is excellent, many rate this is the best tasting banana. KRU Brought into this country from New Guinea. Kru is wine colored, and has narrow ended fruit with green and red markings giving it an interesting and beautiful appearance. Fruit has a great flavor when fully ripe. Grows about 12 ft. tall. The Green Kru is the same flavored fruit but without the wine colored markings. MONKEY FINGER A terrific looking plant that produces very large bunches of long thin bananas with slight curving. It truly resembles the elongated fingers of a large monkey hand and hence obtained its name. The fruit is firm and sub-acid sweet giving it a very refreshing flavor. Height 10-12 ft. MYSORE (Height 14-16 ft.) and its close cousin, MISI LUKI (Height 12 ft.) are the most popular and delicious lady finger bananas we have tasted. Popular in India, the mysore is an important commercial crop for that area of the world and we see why. The shelf life of these delicious little morsels out last any other by several days. They are sturdy and resistant to most problems as well as fast growing. Loved by children and adults alike! MUSELLA LASIOCARPA This short, stout, ornamental banana like plant is a prolific grower with tight clustering leaves. It produces a golden-yellow inflorescence emerging from the center & extending upward like a crowned jewel. Flower lasts about a month. Beautiful and Unusual. Approx. 4 ft. tall. NINO This exceptional sweet, thin skinned baby banana produces a fruit about 3-4 inches long. It is a light green plant that grows rapidly to about 8-10 ft. It may take several to quench your banana hunger but every bite is a treat. ORNATA One of several flowering ornamental beauties that are a colorful addition to landscape or gardens. The erect flower extends from the lush greenery of the leaves as if playing hide and seek. We carry the Bronze, Dusty Rose, Leyte White, Magenta, Pink & Red at this time, all magnificent. PITOGO A wonderfully different looking fruit that resembles a fig more than a banana. Its ping-pong ball looking fruit is as delicious as it is unusual. We can't keep enough ahead of the demand. A real conversation piece as well as a special treat. Grows about 10-12 ft. in height.
PRAYING HANDS Now here is a real eye stopper. The fruit is fused together making each hand look like a baseball MIT or hands in the praying pose. When completely ripe it is possible to separate the fingers to reveal a great tasting vanilla flavored banana. A must for the real banana enthusiast. Height 10-14 ft. PISANG RAJA A wonderful Indian variety with a yellow-orange flesh and sweet delectable flavor. Once you have tasted this baby you're hooked on this 14 ft. delicacy. RAJAPURI A very popular sturdy plant originating in India and becoming a favorite around the world. Due to the rapid growth and delicious taste of these 3/4 size fruit as well as cool tolerance they have won the hearts (and taste buds) of thousands. One of the most ornamental of all banana plants, and this one bears fine-tasting fruit, too. This Hawaiian cultivar has leaves that are burgundy colored on their lower surface to match the red-pink pseudostem. Being of a modest height, it is suited to both the landscape and greenhouse where it makes a beautiful specimen. The unripe fruit skin starts out pale yellow and should not be picked until it is very ripe. This is a close relative of Musa ‘White Iholene’ and Musa ‘Ha’a’, which is the dwarf form of the ‘Iholene’ group. Very distinctive! of uses. (Heights: Red: 10-12 ft., White: 8-10 ft., Ha'a: 6-8 ft.)
SABA The "sequoia" of the banana plants with huge pseudostem (range 12-24" diameter) and heights ranging from 16-20 ft. here, however clients have reported even greater heights in other areas of the country. The wonderful tasting cooking banana makes the best tostones we have ever eaten. A sturdy plant and somewhat cool tolerant. (A must for the collector). Notably hardy for up to zone 8 areas - should be protected with mulch during the winter in colder areas. SUPER DWARF A real midget banana growing about 3 ft. tall with wide leaves and green coloration. It produces a small bunch of medium - large fruit. Great for containerized growing or small spots in the yard or garden. A real cutie. ‘Sikkimensis’ is the same cultivar a hookerii. This is a fast growing, good suckering plant with a thin trunk that originated in North India, elevation 6000-7000 feet. More attractive than ‘Basjoo’, it is maroon with a slightly copper underside. ‘Sikkimensis’ is prone to rot when frozen back. Also known as the Abaca and Giant Pisang is a seeded variety that is used primarily for its fiber in the Phillippines for making rope. It is disease resistant, grows about 16 ft. in the US & has a beautiful golden inflorescence - rare.
THOUSAND FINGERS A most unusual banana, ‘1000 Fingers’ is a beautiful solid green plant that grows 8 to 10 feet tall and produces sweet 1 ½” tiny bananas too numerous to count. This is a unique and unusual variety with a stem of fruit can be as long a 8 feet. The fruit are seedless and sweet with a pleasant flavor. TUUGIA An unusual plant in that it produces a full sized, thin fruit that has a slight "s" shape. A fast growing variety with a light green pseudostem and reproduces rhizomes rapidly. Height 10-12 ft.
VALERY One of the Cavendish varieties that produces a full sized fruit with a creamy texture. A midsize plant good for backyard treats for the family. Height 10 ft.
VELUTINA This small ornamental, 3-6 ft. is a gorgeous thin leaved green plant that produces a small, hot pink, fuzzy banana that stands erect (australimusa). When it is mature it peals itself back exposing a white seeded fruit just ready for the plucking. Use care if eating, the seeds are like a buckshot and could easily chip a tooth. VIENTE COHOL A dessert variety originating in the Philippine area and having green pseudostem with some brown patches. The small plump fruit (3-4") are soft and sweet. A real cutie. Height about 10 ft.
WILLIAMS A Cavendish type that produces a full sized fruit with a wonderful taste! This is a very desirable variety that produces grocery store type bananas. The plant reaches 10 to 16 ft and the stem has an appearance that it is touched with a dark brown coloring. The fruit is also much larger than the dwarf cavendish varieties. WHITE IHOLENE The plant of the White Iholene is light green and covered with waxy flakes of excess chitin that gives it a white appearance. There is only a slight hint of burgundy color beneath the leaf and definite line on only one margin of the bottom of each leaf. Heads of fruit are about 30 pounds consisting of eight to ten hands when well raised. The fruit has a large gradient between the larger fruit of the top hands and the smaller fruit of the bottom hands. ZAN MORENO A dwarf Cavendish sub type that produces a sweet, creamy great tasting fruit. Height about 5-6 ft. ZEBRINA Also known as a "Sumatrana" or a "Blood" banana plant. This plant is mainly used as an ornamental. It sports lovely burgundy and green variegated leaves. The fruit is very small, deep red, and seeded. The red/green variegation adds a nice touch to a tropical landscape. It also adds a beautiful touch when potted and placed around pools, patios, etc. Grows to heights of 6-8 ft. KOFI. From Papau New Guinea, a member of the Iholena sub group which is a combination cooking-dessert banana that rated highest in the TREC tasting tests. **** PLEASE NOTE THAT HEIGHTS GIVEN ARE FOR REFERENCE ONLY.
